Identity: Reflection

The design is “Self in Progress” and is meant to be made as a half page booklet made by me (Karley Schimpf). The medium of the design project to be a small booklet serving as a guideline to major words that mean a lot to me personally with abstract pictorial representations. The structure is the use of one recurring pattern piece with the left facing page primarily consisting of an image made using the pattern to depict the word on the right facing page.  The specific subject is the six words in use to give someone perspective into how I live my life and some of the beliefs I hold personally. The images are there to allow for a more freeform interpretation of the concert definitions given. What may have been my reasoning and the shapes that I made with the pattern may from someone else’s perspective seem to be something else due to their own personal interpretation of the word and image and their life experiences. The unifying principles in this work is the way in which each word is presented and the shapes used in the images for each word. Each word is treated in the same matter equal to each other and their definitions are treated in the same way. No one word is given more stress over the other words in the booklet. This gives no indication to weather one holds more meaning or contributes more than the others. The only time that a word is stressed more than the other is when I use an image in the largest shape on the last word to help better communicate the gravity and meaning behind that perspective/word at the end of the booklet. As if it is a remind each time after flipping through the booklet what that last perspective really means compared to the other words. Originally I wanted to do a large hand drawn mandala then burn it and show the creation and destruction of it in a meditative way. Again I got ahead of myself and did not think of the time allocation or my own personal motivation in the project, this is something I am working on and will have to continue working on when deadlines become more concrete in the working world. Because of this it leads me to this booklet I make lists quiet often and have a slight OCD where I need to have everything organized in such a way otherwise I can’t work. I am also forgetful and can lose where my point A was in relation to my point B and somehow end up at point C. So I felt it fitting to make a booklet, much like my lists that reminds me of some of the things I find important. I want the audience of this project to come away from it with a possible better understanding of my thought process and how I digest information, and maybe come away with their own interpretations of the words or find ways that they fit into their own life style.

Identity: Final Critique

Identity: Second Critique

DePaul Advertising: Reflection

The design is for the CDM advertising identity in GD200: Graphic Design II, created in Adobe Illustrator to be produced as a mural on the north facing wall of the CDM building.
The subject of the mural is a non-gender, non-ethnically identifiable Television head humanoid being holding a box with the DePaul logo on it. From within the box comes spilling out all the majors and visuals related to CDM majors taking up the majority of the rest of the mural. The work is all made in Adobe Illustrator using the pen tool to help create a unifying texture throughout the composition and avoid conflicting art styles. The overall piece is deconstructive because of the layering of different elements that relate to the different majors at CDM.

The works relates to me as the creator because I am a student that goes to CDM, I bring my experiences as a student at the college and my own personal knowledge of being in the college and seeing other students work to the mural, I want to show the energy, aspiration and imagination of those motivated people I have had the joy of meeting at DePaul in the CDM in the mural.  When compared to the others in class there was a clear divide between what I think of as “normal” advertising ones that could be displayed anywhere and would have the same effect and those that were site specific and would only make sense in that setting. My mural falls in the latter of the two categories while it may not be conventional I feel like both categories accomplish the task.

The effect I want this to have on my audience is for them to be energized and motivated to learn more about DePaul and the CDM majors.

McBratney Final

Identity Analysis

My design for the Us vs. Them assignment was titled the Shades of Shoshanna. I used a photograph of myself, and tools in Illustrator to complete this on November 5th, 2013. It was a digital version of six different artboards, each of an illustrated version of myself, with different coloring of my hair on each. The specific subject in this piece is the hair colors that I’ve done and the variety that I’ve dyed it. While I focused on that for the most part, I also had a secondary subject of qualities of myself that you can’t tell just by looking at me. I wanted to show that there are many different shades, or qualities, that I express.
I used elements of type, photo, illustration, and color to illustrate my piece. Over the complete design of the six artboards, they are integrative towards each other, each comparing a difference of myself with another difference of myself. Though, within each composition, I feel they are geometric with the type on the poster easy to read and making sense in its position. The portrait is centered for the most part and easy on the eyes, with only slight wavy coloring of different tints of gray in the background. The focus is clearly placed on my hair and the type that coordinates with that color
This piece of mine has to do with my hair style, and how I feel it is a large part of my identify and what people know about me. I bring other people’s opinions and what my close friends and family have told me about myself in the text of the project, while bringing my experiences of dying my hair many, many colors to this piece. I feel most people, besides a few, had focused on their heritage or religion, but I think I had a different focus, similar to a classmate who’s focus was on facial hair in his family, which was on my individual self and appearance. I feel my work was very simple, which I am happy but not completely satisfied with. I think the critique about animating the faces in each more would make it appear different enough. I wanted a very simple and straightforward approach, with little distractions in my piece.

I think the designer who used the most similar approach to my work was Andy Warhol. Both of us have used repeating portraits, posterized and colorized photos. The events through my life of dying my hair different colors had shaped the approach I took. I wanted to appear as the same girl, but with changing hair in each picture. I wanted people to see the qualities that are brought out with different hair colors, and that people may see me as a different type of girl during each time of my life, but ultimately I am the same. I feel the final was strong, but I agree with one of the classmates that maybe I could’ve combined them all into one image, although it would have to be quite large to be able to see all the type included. I was happy with the aesthetic and what my intent for the design was.

CDM Ad Final | Chris Solorzano

For my final, I wanted to create something that I've never seen before. I drew inspiration from everywhere so I can't point to anything specific. I can say that I got inspiration from my wrist that wears a watch. Chicago is a very diverse city, CDM has many types of students from many backgrounds. Looking at other ad campaigns, I didn't want to do what other schools have done. Most of them try to create an atmosphere and identity for their schools. CDM is all about creating and exploring. Therefore I think that  instead of doing that, we should make use of the wall on the side of the school and just display the name of the school. Along with that, it would be great to include something that everybody can use. The time and the weather along side of the building. Of course these will be electric signs that are up to show a live status of the current time and weather.

I believe this will set us apart from other colleges without enforcing any kind of quote or fact. If they take interest in the school, they can always walk in the school for more information.

I couldn't get a price quote for this because the companies that I contacted never responded and some couldn't do what I was asking for. Perhaps, DePaul CDM, knows of a company that can do this. I know it is possible.

Shoshanna Final Critique

this is my final design for the CDM vinyl poster for this building. I wanted to illustrate that the being part of this school feels like we're in the center of the city. Instead of saying anything about this, I simply put a 'You are here' map locater on this building, and on the poster, it is the center of the city. I used the DePaul colors for the city to bring our school into the city more. When walking past the building now, they will see a DePaul pride and an image that illustrates how CDM is in the center of our city. I got a quote in the early stages that was $3,860 for the poster, and the image would be on a 40ft tall and 63ft wide poster.

Lauren Bunker Final CDM Critique

This piece would be a 20’ x 40’ vinyl poster that would have from the fifth to the second floor of the building. I would like for the green “CDM” ink to be glow in the dark, leaving the rest of the poster mostly unnoticeable at night.
When thinking about everything that goes on in the building, I kept think of the word “digital”. From “digital” I moved to “pixels”. So much of what we do is on computer, camera, and television screens- little lighted squares everywhere.
I also felt that a simple poster with minimal writing and no photography would be the best solution. I really wanted people to receive barely enough information to understand that it was a DePaul college and get a slight idea of what goes on inside. I mostly wanted something strange looking to catch the eye.
I think that the color choice and use of the pixels will communicate that the building focuses mostly on computers and technology topics. I hope that the people who see it and are looking for our type of school will be curious and google the school to find out more.
I have noticed that my poster’s lack of information and readable material is similar to some of my classmates and very different from others. Some students also chose to do illustrations or create symbols or icons. I think that I went in this more minimal, pixel route partly inspired by a mural that used to be in Detroit. I think that there is an advertisement hanging over it now, but on the side of one of the buildings there used to be a black, white, and red pixel mural.
I got an online quote saying that the banner would cost about $2,200 to print. My dad, who deals with construction contractors on a regular basis, said to budget between $1,000 and $1,500 for the labor to install the sign and that the price could vary significantly depending how it was installed. He thought another $1,000 for cables and hooks to secure the banner to the building would be a reasonable estimate.

Randall Final Crit

I originally wanted to do a flag, I was going to to choose the american flag, but after the critique, the group agreed, I should change it to the Chicago flag. That idea just wasn't speaking to me. I wanted something that you don't see very often around the city. My mind focus on the stars. I have live in this city for so long, and the one thing I miss, is the stars, the light pollution as we are aware of, hides most of them from our sight. I wanted to attract the attention to just not possible future DePaul students, but to also be an attraction to the city. I choose a constellation, with the most stars I could find, for the majors. i figure each star could be an light, and of course they would turn on during the night, giving off a soft glow. Then during the day, the tiny stars could be pieces of glass. The glass would reflect the natural light of the day, drawing attention of the eyes. Then the "DePaul University" could have EL wire lights weave through the type, to give off the nice DePaul blue.

Alice Robinson - final crit

For my final critique I decided to keep the poster at 13'x19'. Also deciding to keep it simple because that brick wall has enough stuff on the exterior of it that makes it look cluttered. I wanted the poster to just give off a funny 'ha' when you see it, but also with a quote that would I guess make peoples minds wander. DePaul uses this little motto a lot so I just extended it to the CDM center since there are a lot of opportunities to travel abroad within the school.
I used one font for the poster, and tried to find the same font for the Depaul Logo but couldn't, so I just stuck with one other than the logo. I think personally, its missing something, but I just don't know what. I didn't want to make a poster just stating CDM DePaul university, but I think it needs a little something else...
I ok with how It came out but I had a hard time deciding whether the human arm should have been adams or the arm of God? I wanted to give the impression that the arm is showing skill, creativity, and togetherness maybe giving the person viewing it a sense of encouragement or motivation through self empowerment. However I don't want to offend anyone saying that anyone could be a 'God', but to me I guess if you create something you are the person responsible- I don't know..
Also I looked up on the Impact site that putting the poster up would cost around 4 grand, however on other quote sites it would be only around 3-4 grand including physical labor.

Isabel Bieri: Project 3 Final Critique

My original idea for the image was to make a visual kind of representation of "creative minds," because at CDM we're all about making stuff. I also wanted it to be pretty eye-catching and unique in comparison to your "average" university ad because I really think that extraordinary things happen within CDM, and if it's going to be plastered on the side of the building it should definitely look cool!

I took it a step further by turning it into a sort of mind-map like the ones we've made for class, as suggested during the last critique. I was struggling to find a way to include something more, specifically/ hopefully the CDM majors and I decided that this was a good way to do that and communicate more about CDM/DePaul. All of the majors stem out of a yellow-green line, things that come to mind when I think of CDM stem out of the pink lines, and the DePaul logo stems out of a single blue line. I took away the stripes in the back because I added type beyond the silhouette and that became hard to read. Nothing else I tried looked quite right, so I just kept it a simple but still bright white that I think would contrast nicely against the building.

Had I more time, I really would have liked to take a handwritten looking approach to the type, so as to better go along with the mind-map idea. I tried to still kind of maintain that kind of handmade essence (ish) by not making the angles of the lines too perfect.

Ideally this would be a vinyl banner, 56x40 in dimension which would cost $4,009.60 from chicagoprintingcenter.com

Alexis Brooks-Final Project Process

Alexis Brooks Final Project

This project came in various steps for me. I began with sketches then went to the computer to complete mimi drafts. The title of this project is simply called, "DePaul CDM." I wanted my design to incorporate squares. I decided to use the squares to emphasize a space in a digital world. I also incorporated a simple line drawing. The line and cube represent the somewhat deconstruction of a digital world and all its mini facets. I also chose to use very minimal text. I didn't want to incorporate a lot of text because I didn't want the main message DePaul CDM to be distracted. I also was thinking about the people who drive down Wabash and the people on the "L."I wanted to give my audience a piece they could read in a matter of seconds. Below I have included each step of my design all leading up to the final two.

While conducting research for this project, I came across a couple of brand advertisements that struck my interest.

In each design, that I uploaded there was an essence of bold typefaces and eccentric colors. From these designs, I brainstormed thumbnail sketches that involved the use of Sans Serif typefaces and the use of vibrant colors. Not only did I begin to note the design aesthetics of the piece, I researched how much it would would be to produce a vinyl that would go along the CDM building. The quote came from Chicago Printing Center.
