Final Critique

The title of my piece is called,"Fearlessly Black." I originally started with the idea of being black and an artist. However, my idea changed when I came across a bible verse that dealt with fear. Immediately, I knew my path for the project changed. After drawing the partial silhouette of the girl, I did some custom watercolor painting. I also gathered some textures to incorporate in the piece. The part of the project that took the longest was creating the subtle line work that creates a dynamic element for the project. Not only was that the difficult part, but it took me a while to establish my headline. Eventually I chose to go with, "My Black is Fearless." The poster itself is 4 ft by 5ft, so its extremely large. The biggest downfall I had with this piece is its size. Since, it is so large it was very difficult for me to save the file and send it to be printed. Overall, however I feel this poster exemplifies my identity pretty well. I am black. I am fearless. Most importantly I am grounded by my faith.

Isabel Bieri: Identity Critique 2

I described to my group during the last critique that I wanted to draw an unfinished kind of looking portrait of myself, using the process of creating and revising a drawing as a metaphor for figuring out my identity, but it was suggested by my group that I document my drawing in a series of images, showing my progress as I go. That would make my intended metaphor more clear, but I'm not sure of how to go about doing that and still making all of the images interesting looking, especially the earlier ones where there would be less detail. Also, this isn't how I would actually lay out the images but I didn't want to mess with the final composition til I was completely done. Especially because I'm not sure if I want to follow through with the idea, but I'm trying it out.

Here is my final project. I made some big changes since the last critique. Mainly in the color and layout of things. I stuck with my original concept. I wanted to give my view on life a personality and the only thing that came to mind was to give it a personality of a Saint. At first I struggled a bit because I thought that it looked too religious and might send off the wrong message. Although I am a Spiritual person, this project does not promote a preference in religion. My intent was to give the design an autonomous viewpoint. I want it to be open to interpretation. Since this in identity project, I didn't want to pour myself into it, instead I wanted to showcase the foundation of what I am. Something that we can all relate too, instead of segregating certain people. The project is about the most basic human needs. If you look at the body of the figure, you will see that one hand is dark and the other is light. It's a small detail that I added because although I said I don't want it to be literal, I chose these colors to emphasize that I do not classify myself by race and my nationality has nothing and does nothing to hold me or make me. I'm really against labels and I think people are the same everywhere. This is what I want my project to convey. The rest, you can take how you wish.
I also added the face of St.Peter but I pixelated the image because it was aesthetically pleasing and because I wanted the piece to maintain that Saint like appeal.

This design is intended to be printed in both large size and small wallet size. When I think of it, I can see it as one of those prayer cards that go in a wallet and you carry with you everywhere.   I am very proud of how it came out and will eventually hang it in my home. I would classify my approach as integrative and geometric. It's integrative because the words make the poster. They create emphasis on the different parts of the figure.

When I did this project, I didn't look up any designers for inspiration. It was more like digging through my brain and finding inspiration from within.

Overall I think this was a very successful identity project. I'm really proud of it. The strengths are the color and typography. My weakness is that I am somewhat disappointed that  I didn't make this into a series. I've love to make 5 of these that each focus on one of the parts I mentioned in my design. I think I'm going to do this in the future.

Einarsen Final Critique

My identity project is called "My Portable Life Museum." Everywhere I go, I carry my journal with me. I keep song lyrics or my own and others, quotes, pictures, ticket stubs, etc. taped throughout my chaotic journal. I based my project on a year of my life that I traveled without going home. I started in South America and made my way to Europe. I did this alone, not knowing a person in either continent. I believe I became a different person after traveling. As Mary Ann Radmacher said, "I am not the same having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world." Author, Keri Smith wrote the book and travel guide How to be an Explorer of the World. I remember various points from the book that was given to me before I left for Argentina in August of 2012. One thing I remembered was "keep pictures of patterns." This was easy to me as each country provided me with the most beautiful unforgettable colors.

I used Illustrator and Photoshop to develop a journal inspired design. I took some of the patterns from pictures I snapped while traveling. I identify myself with these patterns, because each one tells a story about me. Why each specific pattern caught my eye is something that tells much more about me than I "thought it was pretty." I have never been one to stop and stare at art in a museum, but when I saw it on the street throughout my year of traveling solo, I discovered a passion I never thought I had.
