Job Project: Isabel Bieri

Jobs:

Lifeguard
  • May-Aug 2008, Dolphin Cove (water park), Dundee Township Park District, Carpentersville IL
  • I didn't particularly like anyone, to be honest.
  • Pool, children, sun
  • $8.25/hour, 6 hours a week
  • $500 total
Cashier
  •  Nov 2011-Jan 2013, Target, Hoffman Estates IL
  • I liked Craig. I disliked one of the managers, Marcy.
  • Hangers, plastic bags, shopping baskets
  • $8.25/hour, 25-40 hours a week
  • $2,000 total
Mickey Mouse
  • Sep 2013, Kings Banquet Hall, Palatine IL. I was asked to dress up as Mickey Mouse at a baby shower as a favor to a friend.
  • I liked the intoxicated men who kept asking to take pictures with me and Minnie. There were some children there who were very clingy that I did not appreciate.
  • Cameras, balloon animals, disco ball
  • $60 for an hour and a half.
Nursing Home Volunteer
  • April 2011, Eastgate Manor, Algonquin IL
  • I liked all of the old folks I met. They were pretty cool. I didn't dislike anyone there.
  • Yahtzee game, violin, playing cards.
  • I didn't get paid. I just played board games and performed violin with the elderly.

Project Ideas:
Integrative
Expectations vs. Reality
For the integrative approach, I want to draw a poster type thing where I compare my expectations of being a lifeguard to the reality of being a lifeguard. This is a sketch of my idea.

Geometric Grid
Summer (Is Not So) Fun
For the geometric grid approach, I want to make a sort of typographic poster against a background like this (I'm gonna take a picture of the water in the fountain outside of my apartment building). I don't know what exactly what I want it to say yet, but I want the poster to be kind of ironic- have it look all nice and inviting but have the text say something that is none of those things.
This won't necessarily be the text I use (I don't think it's funny enough), but this is a quick sketch of the direction that I want to go in with the type.

Deconstructive
The Many "Joys" of Being Responsible for the Well-Being of Tiny People
For the deconstructive approach, I want to draw a sort of collage of imagery and thoughts that I had while working at the pool. I want to maintain a hand-drawn look to it.
