You .vs. Them
Project Two
When I approached this project, I had one big idea to tackle. This idea was my identity. Since I was younger, I always tried to categorize certain aspects of my identity. So for this project I wanted to convey these certain qualities that I feel help tell the story. Being an African American has really been the base of my identity. To portray this, I intend to create a poster displaying a young African American women with parts of her body representing of objects that help me identity who I am. The head of the girl will be half an afro and half straight hair to suggest that I have different qualities. Her shirt will be broken in two. The top of the shirt with identify with a regular cotton shirt while the bottom will of the shirt will change into a can of paint. This idea of paint refers to me identifying with the an artistic community. The arms will be shown as paintbrushes to infer that through my life I have painted way for my own journey.
From the structural premise of the body, the paint can will have paint dripping into words that have a powerful meaning for me. The message the words will say are, “So What I’m Black , I’m Still An Artist.” I wanted to include this statement becuase part of my identity is the idea of standing within the same realm as everyone else. Most of the time in my life it has been that for any goal that I want to achieve, I have to work twice as hard because of my ethnicity. The background of the image will be the text from a book that I feel relates to the black struggle or relates to being a young black woman. The text will be small but it will also will take shape as pattern to give the poster texture.
As far as aesthetics go, the design will be constructed in parts. There will be hand drawn work, vector illustrations, paint, and pictures. These aspects will ultimately make the piece deconstructive.
