The title of this project is Worst Job Ever and the designer
is me, Nicolle Rezwin. The due date of this project was October 15, 2013. My Worst job was working at an animal shelter in
Chicago. I wanted to show that the animal shelter was a horrible place not only for me, but for the animals that were there. The materials I used for this project was the computer and Adobe
Photoshop and Illustrator software. I also used photographs that I took to
compose my pieces. Throughout the three designs, I used a common theme of sympathy. I used depressing colors such as brown, grey, and black. The designs shown are geometric, integrative, and deconstructive.
The first design I have is a deconstructive piece. In order to complete this design, I took photographs of my dog, Lacey, with my arm in her mouth. I took a picture of her doing this because at the animal shelter, I got bit by a dog while taking him out of the cage and I wanted to show this is my work The subject is the dog biting my arm.. Even though the dog bit me, I was not mad because I knew the dog was afraid and did not know who I was or what I was going to do to him. The dogs there go through a lot both physically and mentally and a dog bite seemed minor. I showed this in a deconstructive way with the type. I want the viewers of my work to have sympathy for the animal as well. This piece is a deconstructive piece because it has overlapped and collaged images; It has a stylized type face.
My next design is an integrative design. In this piece, I took a picture of a toy handcuff and a leash that they would use at the animal shelter. These are the main subjects of the piece. I compared this piece to a jail because when I was at the animal shelter, not only did I feel like I was in jail, but the animals were in jail, their cages, as well. I used the picture of the leash because the animals cannot go without a leash. They are trapped at the animal shelter. Wherever the leash leads them, they have to go. I put an open handcuff because it represents that I was allowed to escape the animal shelter at 4:00pm. The animal was not allowed to leave. I also used to text to clarify my point. I used Photoshop and Illustrator to compose this piece. This piece is integrative because there is a comparison of scale, merging of one image into another, and translation.
The last design is a geometric piece. Again, I used my dog for a model for this piece. I took a picture of her looking sad and used Photoshop to make her look dirty and used Illustrator for the text. I also used the texture of my garage floor because it resembled the floor where the cages were at the animal shelter, which were hard, cold, and dirty. The main subject of the piece is a dog looking depressed because the animal shelter mistreats the animals. I also used text that showed what the dog would be thinking in the animal shelter. I made the text around the dog because I wanted to it to look like the dog was shivering. This piece is geometric because it is on a grid, simple design and color, and there is a single use of graphics.
For my inspiration, I looked at other class blogs from previous years and looked at the work of students that had a worst job of working with animals. I also took a lot of pictures and drew some sketches to generate ideas.
