This project was to create three posters that relate to our worst job ever using three different solutions created digitally. I chose to interpret the project in a different way by creating three posters about my worst job rejection. The purpose was to express the negative parts of the job creatively using the different solutions. These solutions being geometric, deconstructive, and integrative.
My first poster I created was the geometric. I decided to use the shape of the Nautilus shell as my grid based on my idea of depicted a sort of process or steps of how I did not get the job I applied for and using a vector image I created to resemble a folded origami fortune teller. This image relates to the job because in the interview they asked the applicants to attempt to teach them something and I chose to teach them how to fold an paper origami fortune teller. It also relates ironically in a way that to use one you are to ask a question and be revealed a fortune. Using this, I depicted in my geometric poster the positive aspects of my interview in question form and ultimately being told a fortune that I did not get the job all following along the shape of the Nautilus shell grid. The design expresses my confusion of not getting the job and the reality of the situation.
My second poster was the integrative. I decided to have the focus be the text in this design. I chose to take the phrase "If you don't get the job don't take it personal" because it reflects how looking back I shouldn't have taken the rejection as hard as I did even though it was frustrating. The "take it personal text" was depicted in a scratchy type while the rest was in a nice print handwriting type. To show the integrative solution I chose to include images of a nice sharp pencil and then a broken pencil since the job itself was to be a writing tutor.
The last poster was the deconstructive. I chose to take elements from my previous posters into this design. I depicted a dart board with the open fortune being pierced by arrows, and deconstructing the text of the things the thing the interviewer said as I recalled in my rejection letter.
I brought with these designs a sense of defeat and frustration. I also think I brought a bit of humor to a bad experience through these designs. My work differs in that I changed the topic slightly to a worst job rejection rather than worst job. Also I believe my work used a lot of white space or space in general than most. I chose to approach this project with simplicity. I wanted text to be the main focus in them because my work usually focuses on illustrations or images not type. So I worked outside my comfort zone for the most part. I wanted it to be structured so the deconstructive was the most difficult to accomplish, and I defaulted to what I was more comfortable with.
My purpose was to design using these solutions to convey how I felt after being turned down for a job I was sure I thought I would get. I hope that my designs relate to people who ever felt the same after a similar experience. Overall I feel pretty good about my designs, My skills photoshop could use improvement, and I should probably learn to get comfortable with the deconstructive solution, but I think the way I used the grid in the geometric was good as well as the illustrations, and the way I treated the type was good in my integrative. I should also however check for grammar in my text next time.
