Us vs Them: Racial, Ethnic, and Cultural Roots (Hadiya)

I identify as African American, but I have Native American ancestry on my mothers side, and part of my culture has Jamaican roots from my father's side. I don't really have any religious affiliation, I believe in a mixed bag of things. My family recognizes Christian holidays but we don't attend church, although my father grew up very spiritual in Jamaica. When I was younger however I struggled with seeing many of my friends and most people in general being of a Christian faith, and not really having a religious tradition amongst my family. I remember feeling embarrassed not belonging to the common faith of many African American families that I knew and rarely shared my Jamaican culture with my friends until I got older. As far as anyone in my family being the victimized, my parents especially my mother has told me many stories of how race affected her life growing up in the 70's in Chicago. And other acts of subtle racism they endured. I don't consider myself as part of another culture, but I do find the Indian culture alluring, and have been drawn to it lately.
