Alice Robinson - Project 2 Questions/Concept Sketches

1. "List your ethnicities as far back as you have knowledge..."
My mom was born in a Navy base in Massachusetts, her father was born in England and is 100% English(but there is no further knowledge of my grandpas parents because his mother abandoned him at age 11 with his brother Roger and sent him to New York). My grandpa found out before he was sent off by his mother that his father ran away from his family and have several other families around the area in England- so technically I have a lot of other family members that I've never met- it would be cool to meet them. My mother's mother was born in Poland and came to New York with her brother- she is 100% Austrian. My father was born in Canada, his mother was born in Glasgow, Scotland. My father's father was born in Wales. My mother has recently sent her parents to get a genetic scrap done of their full ethnic background.

2. "List your religious affiliations and those of your ancestors..."
I have no religion, and I like it that way. Well I'm Buddhist, but honestly this religion is so lax that I don't think it is really a religion but more a philosophy (http://buddhism.about.com/od/basicbuddhistteachings/a/philosophy.htm). My grandma(mothers mom) is strict Catholic and hates that I don't go to church. I have a real shtick for people who try to "save my soul". Two of my old roommates would say that because I didn't go to Church that I would go to hell. I have a big problem with that and it makes me hate religion sometimes, if I wanted saving I'd go to a priest or something- but I don't need "saving" obviously. My dad is the same way, we view religion as kinda of a nuisance- only because when we say we aren't affiliated with any religion people take it to heart and make a point out of their day to say how pathetic we are and that we are missing out on life.

3. "Have you, or anyone in your family, been harassed or victimized because of race?..."
I have been called a Nazi when my dad spoke German to me in a grocery store when I was little. Both have blonde hair and blue eyes we apparently fit the "Nazi" appearance. View question 2.

4. "Do you identify with a given culture that is not addressed above?..."
No,  I'm very English, in that way I find things funny, the way I dress, the way I speak etc etc.  I guess if I had to identify with another culture it would be Norwegian- since there are family members I am blood related to that are Norwegian and when I went to Norway twice, It was the most beautiful place I've ever been to and one day would love to live there.

5. "Do you have friends that cross ethnic, race, religious, gender, or cultural barriers?"
I'm not sure, nothing comes to mind. If I remember I would edit this post.

••• For this project I think I will probably chose the religious side from these questions and how I don't resonate with any religion (except Buddhism, and really its just the meditation and yoga and questions i really get form it). Right now I'm leaning towards the 8 different family member books, I think this will look very nice if I do it well. Firstly I'll start by photographing old worn books and interviewing family members and one experience they had from being harassed because of gender/religion/ethnicity etc etc. There is an example of a typography project I am working on right now as an example of the first initial of their names will look like with an illustration of their come country made by me.
