Project 1 – My Worst Job
1. The design of the project
was to determine what is your worst job and to create three
compositions that played with geometric, deconstructive, and
integrative. The job that I chose as my worst job is being a
security guard at the Downtown Islamic Center. So for the project, I
concentrated on materials that dealt with Islam and with security.
2. The medium for project one,
was to incorporate printing material along with design material to
create a cohesive composition that was well put but also engaging to
look at the same time. For, example adding images from the fifth
floor hall way as the back ground, and adding design elements using
illustrator to bring the composition to life. The specific subject of
course was to demonstrate security in the three elements, which are:
geometric, deconstructive, and integrative. Using the security vest,
and different locations in the building, I was able to demonstrate
each composition to its fullest. Another great subject maybe even
equally to security was that of the influence of Islam. Since my work
is involved in a Mosque, a lot of Islamic elements were introduced to
each composition in a big way. Such as, Arabic phrases, clothing
wise, and backgrounds. If we look at my geometric composition we can
see that all the elements are in the middle of the composition
linearly. There composition is not busy with only three elements in
the design, not like the others. The design is simple to look at and
has a strong hierarchy of portraying force and peace. My second
design is the deconstructive where I portrayed one of my aspects of
work, which is dealing with a lot of people in one sitting. One of
the aspects of deconstructive is layers of elements on top of each
other as well as, the words being hard to read. Therefore, I wanted
to use that and show how how hectic my job gets when dealing with
lots of people, so I made me on one side talking with people on the
other side, visually creating a hectic conversation back and fourth.
Adding layers of words as well as having an image of the 99 names of
Allah in the background as well. For the last composition, I chose
to present on one side a Muslim lady who is ready for prayer, and on
the other side a Muslim lady who is late for prayer. So in
integrative you mainly compare two elements with each other and for
this I wanted to represent the different people personality that come
to the Mosque
3. When choosing my worst job,
I chose something that is meaningful to me since I am a Muslim
myself, I wanted to express that through my designs. So when doing
the project it was more than just an assignment it was trying to find
who I was as a designer and a person at the same time. One of the
aspects of the project that I enjoyed was having class time for
critiquing our work to the class which benefited a lot to me when
looking at my own designs. It helped me develop my designs even more
and adding more elements in making it more cohesive as a whole.
4. The purpose of me choosing
the specific job and the specific subjects was to give a better
understanding of Muslims in general and to express myself in a way
that I have never expressed before. When I look at my designs I want
the audience to look puzzled into what I am trying to say and to be a
part of my job experience. I also like when people question other
designers composition and that is exactly what I received in the
critiques in class.
