The goal of this project was to create an ad for the north-facing
wall of the CDM building. Knowing that something that I created could be on a
wall for all of Chicago to see was quite exciting. This prospect also came with
quite a bit of pressure.
For my ad I
wanted to stir clear of the stereotypical cookie cutter University ad of a
graduate smiling and holding up their diploma. I wanted to actually say something
about DePaul, make people notice. I knew for sure that I did not want to
incorporate a picture in my ad. So I decided to stick with just type.
Throughout this entire process I came up with a total of three ads.
For the
first ad I wanted to focus on what makes CDM so special, what sets itself apart
from the other schools at DePaul. After doing some research, I decided to focus
on the statistics of what CDM has to offer.
As for the actual ad, I knew that did not want to put the statistics or
facts in a nicely ordered list. It would be to boring and it wouldn’t catch
someone’s attention. No one would stop to read it. I did know that I wanted to
make it bright and colorful. The
background of the ad I decided would be red so that it would stand out. I put
DePaul in large black capital letters. To make the ad a little more interesting
I decided to put the statistics or facts in the letters of DePaul. I put the
statistics in yellow so that they would pop. The statistics that I included
were: 1 person (you), 2 schools, 22 majors, 17 minors, 327 faculty members, and
1 city. I arranged the stats so that there would be one stat per letter so there
were six statistics in all. Underneath DePaul I put University in smaller black
all capital letters. Underneath that I put: Are all YOU need to achieve your
dreams. Come find your place at the College of Computing and Digital Media. The
message that I was trying to get across with this ad was that DePaul provides
you with the resources that will help you find what you love and the tools to
help you achieve your dream.
The second
ad that I did centered around the idea that DePaul’s CDM offers its students
several possibilities. I took the phrase; “Open the door to possibility” quite
literally with this ad. The ad had ten open doors with a different major
written inside of it. Then under the
doors I wrote: Open the door to opportunity. Explore what DePaul’s College of
Computing and Digital Media has to offer. Become apart of the CDM family. I
knew that this idea was a bit cheesy but I decided to go for it. And after
realizing that it would not be the best ad to put on the side of a building, it
was on to the third ad.
At this
point I knew that I needed to step out of my comfort zone and try something new.
After hearing other students ideas that included 3D installations and lights I knew
that I needed and wanted to do something that was more than just a poster on a
wall. I noticed that a computer or keyboard is the only thing that all of the
CDM majors have in common. Computers are where we produce and create. So
expanding on that I came up with the idea of creating a 3D keyboard
installation with a screen above it. The screen would look something like you
would see in Time Square. My idea was to have the installation hooked up to a
computer inside the CDM building where people would look up statistics about
CDM as well as ask question about CDM. Also, whenever someone types in a
question, the question would stream on the screen outside as well as its answer.
The way this all connects to the keyboard is that whenever someone types on the
keyboard the keyboard outside would light up. And to make this more tech friendly
for people who do not have the time to go to the computer in the CDM building, there
would be a number where people could text their questions to. I think this ad
would be good for DePaul because it would grab people’s attention and set us
apart from other universities in Chicago.
