Lauren Bunker CDM Sign Research

I think that these three ads are interesting because they make you think a bit. You have to put a small puzzle together or are shocked a bit by the headline (in the case of the columbia PR ad and the U of Chicago ad). I also like that they are not a big cheesy photo as I saw in so many of the google search results. I am fond of ads that focus on text or a logo. I have seen too many smiling people in graduation robes to spend more than a second looking at them. I don't think I would use anything more than the idea of focusing on text from these ads. I had a really hard time finding anything I really liked. I definitely want to focus on the CDM name and the areas of study and use nice typography to catch people's eyes.

I looked online at a sight called bannerworld.com. They had a 10x20 foot reinforced vinyl sign for outdoor use listed at $430. I would like the sign for the side of the building to be 20'x40' so that it is about three stories tall. I think that doubling the cost of the 10'x20' banner is a logical way to support that the size I would like to use would cost about $860.

Just kidding- someone told me that it isn't reliable to multiply the size to get the price. I also did the math wrong anyway. I found a different site that quoted a 20x40 foot banner at $2,160.

I think that the type of people we would be trying to attract with this sign would be so used to being stimulated by motion graphic and technology that the sign would have to be either very colorful or have some sort of twist. These people would also be in the process of choosing a school so there are some bits of information that would need to be easily accessible. The messages should be clearly understood, not so much an art piece.

  1. Your analysis is right on and focusing on the typography and concept is great. Remember that you need a photo of the side of the CDM building and you should mock-up the size of your piece in an additional image to make sure that it will read. Also though the examples you choose are terrific inspirations, you should develop original text. ALSO, make sure that you check the cost of installation and include the URL from your research.
